How can we help?
Answers to the most common questions about OUT Messenger. Can’t find yours? Write to us. A real person reads every email.
Getting started
How do I create an account?
Open OUT and tap Create OUT ID. Your identity is created on your iPhone. No phone number, no email and no address book are needed. Then choose a username so people can find you.
How do I start a conversation?
- Tap the OUT logo above your chats.
- Find someone by their username, or create a private invite.
- Send the one-use invite link to one person. It expires within 24 hours.
You can also show your own OUT ID as a QR code for someone to scan in person.
How long do messages last?
Messages disappear 10 minutes after they are read. Unread messages wait up to 24 hours and then expire. There is no chat history to scroll back through, by design.
Messages and delivery
My message isn’t delivered
- Check that both iPhones are online.
- Make sure both people have the latest version of OUT from the App Store.
- Remember that unread messages expire after 24 hours.
- If it still fails, email us the app version and the screen where it happened.
What do Sent, Delivered and Read mean?
Sent: it left your iPhone. Delivered: it reached the other iPhone. Read: they opened it, and the 10-minute timer started.
A message disappeared early
Content is kept in memory. If iOS closes the app, or you erase the chat, messages can disappear before their timer ends. This is part of how OUT keeps no chat archive.
Notifications
Why don’t notifications show the message?
On purpose. OUT notifications reveal neither the message nor the sender’s name, so the notification history on your iPhone never holds your words.
I don’t get notifications
- Open iPhone Settings → Notifications → OUT and allow notifications.
- Check that Focus or Do Not Disturb is not silencing OUT.
- Open OUT once so it can register for alerts again.
Safety, report and block
How do I block or report someone?
Inside any conversation, use Report to flag a message or a person, and Block to stop them at once. Blocking rejects their future messages and erases the chat from your iPhone.
What happens after a report?
Reports are reviewed within 24 hours. Accounts that send objectionable content are removed and their OUT ID is disabled. Reports never contain message text, because we cannot read your messages.
How do I check I’m talking to the right person?
Use the live check in the conversation to compare safety fingerprints with the other person. If someone’s fingerprint changes, verify it again before trusting the chat.
OUT Plus
What does OUT Plus include?
Texting, viewing received photos and listening to received voice messages are free. OUT Plus is an optional annual subscription for sending camera photos and voice messages up to 60 seconds.
How do I restore OUT Plus on a new OUT ID?
- Before subscribing, save the private recovery code OUT shows you.
- On the new OUT ID, open Settings → Photo & voice.
- Choose Restore with recovery code and use the same Apple Account that bought the plan.
Restoring moves photo and voice access only. It does not bring back chats or contacts.
How do I cancel?
Subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal in your Apple subscription settings. Deleting your OUT account does not cancel the subscription.
New or lost iPhone
Can I move OUT to a new iPhone?
Your OUT identity is created on, and protected by, your device. It is not synced through iCloud. On a new iPhone you create a new OUT ID and reconnect with your contacts. Chats never move, because they are not stored.
I lost my iPhone
Nobody can read old conversations from it, because OUT keeps no chat archive. Create a new OUT ID on your new iPhone and let your contacts know, so they can verify your new safety fingerprint.
Delete your account
How do I delete my account?
- Open Settings inside OUT.
- Tap Delete account and confirm.
OUT asks our service to delete your account, then removes your identity from the iPhone. If the request cannot be confirmed, the app keeps your identity so you can safely try again.
Not an emergency service
OUT must not be used to contact police, medical or rescue services. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
